 2017 Winter Benefit Highlights

“Light Up the Loop” Winter Awards Benefit Celebrates CDEL’s Success

More than 400 attorneys, judges, bar leaders, elected officials and their guests attended the Center for Disability & Elder Law’s “Light Up the Loop” Winter Awards Benefit on February 23, 2017 hosted by Baker McKenzie in their spectacular Chicago office. Guests gathered to congratulate this year’s honorees and recognize CDEL’s achievements and service to low-income seniors and people with disabilities.

The Winter Benefit was chaired by Anthony J. O’Neill, Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel at Illinois Sports Facilities Authority and CDEL Immediate Past President and Board Member.  The Benefit was one of CDEL’s most successful events raising critical funds and generating excitement and awareness about CDEL’s mission to provide pro bono legal services to Chicago's low income seniors and people with disabilities.

Honorary Co-Chairs Darrell Guy, Associate General Counsel at AT&T, Inc., Daniel M. Kotin, Partner at Tomasik Kotin Kasserman and President at The Chicago Bar Association and Michael S. Smith, Managing Partner at Baker McKenzie, presented CDEL’s annual awards at the event to three outstanding and most deserving recipients.

CDEL honored Theresa Jaffe with its Impact Award for her life-long record of civic leadership of creating, directing, managing and supporting a variety of highly successful nonprofit fundraising efforts. Ms. Jaffe served on the Board of Directors for CDEL in its early years when it was known as the Legal Clinic for the Disabled.  In 2012 she returned to CDEL service creating the “Light Up the Loop” event and chairing it for five consecutive years.  Under Ms. Jaffe’s leadership, the event has become a premier Winter networking destination and now accounts for nearly 25% of CDEL’s annual budget. Ms. Jaffe created and managed the inaugural Chicago Bar Foundation Investing in Justice Campaign.  Since its inception, the Campaign has raised over $14 million to support Chicago’s legal aid agencies.  Through her superior volunteer service to CDEL and to the broader legal aid community, Ms. Jaffe has profoundly impacted the lives of seniors and people with disabilities as well as individuals seeking access to justice throughout Cook County.

The Corporate Partner Award was presented to Walgreens.  Walgreens demonstrates a strong commitment to social responsibility and community partnerships through a diverse portfolio of philanthropic activities. The company is also a leader is diversity hiring practices, including the hiring of seniors and people with disabilities.  Since Walgreens began its partnership with CDEL, sixty-five attorneys and other legal professionals have been trained through four Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars on Powers of Attorney documents and Living Will Declarations for the Senior Center Initiative (SCI) program. These volunteers have participated in seven individual workshops and have assisted ninety senior clients with their documents. The Walgreens CDEL team of committed and caring volunteers has provided a pathway to health and happiness for CDEL’s clients.

The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Linda Ochsenfeld, a nineteen-year volunteer at CDEL.  Ms. Ochsenfeld began her service to CDEL in 1998 when she became the coordinator of the CBA Young Lawyer’s Section Hospice and Homebound Elderly Legal Assistance Program which was transitioned to CDEL. In her law practice Ms. Ochsenfeld has mediated hundreds of workplace and other civil disputes on the state and federal levels, a skill she has brought to her volunteerism.  She has served as a mentor for CDEL volunteer attorneys through the years providing supervision and encouragement. In June of 2012, Ms. Ochsenfeld began volunteering for CDEL’s Senior Legal Assistance Clinics program and within a few months, she adopted the clinic at Bloom Township for her own — a position she holds to this day. Ms. Oschenfeld is a model volunteer, working tirelessly to serve CDEL clients.
